Administrative division of the Republic of Tuva
The Tuva Republic in the Siberian Federal District of the Russian Federation is divided into 17 Koschuune and 2 city districts . A total of 4 urban and 120 rural communities are subordinate to the Koschuuns (status: 2010).
The koshuune correspond to the rajons of the other federal subjects of Russia. The historical Tuvinian name Koschuun for a larger administrative unit encompassing several localities or communities can be traced back to the word for a military banner and the area under it. It was reintroduced in the 1990s and is also official in Russian for the Rajons of the Tuva Republic . The rural communities also have the Tuvinian name Sumon (comparable to the Sums in Mongolia ).
