history

The village is one of the oldest settlements in the republic. It was mentioned as a Buddhist religious site as early as the 18th century . Until the declaration of independence of the Tuvinian People's Republic in 1921 with the capital in what was later to be Kyzyl, the administrative seat of the Urjanchai region was officially in Samagaltai, although Belozarsk (Kyzyl) had already developed into the center shortly after its establishment in 1914. Since 1923 Samagaltai has been the seat of the Tes-Chemski koschuun, named after the most important river in its area.
