Chandagaity ( Russian and Tuvinian Хандага́йты ) is a village (selo) in the Republic of Tuva in Russia with 3207 inhabitants (as of October 14, 2010).

Chandagaity from the north. The state border with Mongolia runs on the nearest mountain range.

The place is about 200 km as the crow flies southwest of the republic capital Kyzyl on the southern edge of the Western Tannu-ola Mountains , in the northwest of the Uws-Nuur basin , 4 km from the state border with Mongolia . It is located on the upper reaches of the river of the same name, which crosses the border almost 10 km to the east and flows into the Uws Nuur lake, 35 km south-east .

Chandagaity is the administrative center of the Kozhuun ( Rajons ) Ovjurski and the seat and only locality of the rural community (selskoje posselenije) Chandagaitinski sumon .

history

The village, which was established in 1938, became the administrative seat of the newly created Koschuun (Tuvinian Өвүр , Öwür ) of the then Tuvinian People's Republic , which was named after the old name of the area, on March 24, 1941, and initially remained so after the annexation to the Soviet Union in 1944.

Chandagaity is located on the 93N-19 (formerly A163) coming from Chadan on the regional road 93K-02 (formerly A192) Kyzyl - Ak-Dovurak , which reaches the Mongolian border south of the village. In an easterly direction in Chandagaity the regional road 93N-21, following the state border north of the Uws Nuur, branches off to Ak-Tschyraa , from there further as 93N-39 to the neighboring Koschuun center of Samagaltai 200 km away . A good 10 km to the northwest, below the 1950  m Chondergei pass over the Tannu-ola main ridge along the 93N-19, the unpaved regional road 93N-22 branches off to the Mugur-Aksy district center 100 km to the west .
