history

Schagonar was founded in 1888 and received city rights after Tuwas annexed to the Soviet Union in 1945. Because of the flooding of the Sajano-Schuschensker reservoir , the original city was abandoned in the 1970s and rebuilt about 7 kilometers to the east and higher.

The place name is derived from a Tuvinian transformation (Schagaan-Aryg) of the Mongolian name Zaganaryg for white dry valley .
