A bottle of Veterano, here still with the old name Brandy on the label

Veterano is the brand name of a spirit from the traditional southern Spanish company Osborne , which is sold worldwide. It is made from local wine distillates in the Andalusian coastal town of El Puerto de Santa María , bordering the Bay of Cádiz .

history

In 1956, the Azor advertising agency was commissioned by the Osborne company to create a striking brand logo for the newly developed Brandy Veterano , which should also represent this brandy on large billboards. The Spanish artist Manolo Prieto then designed the silhouette of a black bull for the Veterano, which was approved by the Osborne family. In 1957 the Osborne bull was officially introduced as a trademark. In the following years up to the present day, the black bull of the Veterano has developed into a distinctive mark of the Spanish nation and is now publicly perceived as part of Spanish culture. Since 2010, the alcohol content has been reduced from 36% to 30% worldwide, first in Spain since 2012, which is why Veterano can no longer be called brandy (or brandy ) according to EU legislation .

Manufacture and classification

Veterano is aged in oak barrels for at least twelve months using the Spanish Solera method . The spirit was sold under the EU-protected and guaranteed designation of origin Brandy de Jerez with an alcohol content of 36% . This is no longer possible after the alcohol has been reduced to 30%, which is why the label now contains the indication of spirits and the Spanish quality class Solera .

Characteristics and variants

The spirit has a mahogany color and a light plum bouquet . The Veterano contains 30 percent alcohol by volume . Osborne also offers a brandy called 'Veterano 8a Generación Reserva'.
