The VfR Übach-Palenberg (officially: Association for lawn games Übach-Palenberg eV ) is a sports club from Übach-Palenberg in the Heinsberg district . The first soccer team played for 17 years in the highest amateur league on the Middle Rhine.

history

The club was created on August 13, 1950 through the merger of TuS Rheinland Übach with VfR Palenberg-Marienberg . The Übach club went back to the FC Rheinland Übach founded in 1919 , which merged with the TuS Übach gymnastics club to form TuS Rheinland Übach in 1925 . Also in 1925, VfR Palenberg was founded, which was later renamed VfR Palenberg-Marienberg . Already in the 1930s, the Palenbergers played in the second-class district class at the time . Leading employees of the Carolus-Magnus mine finally initiated the merger to form today's VfR Übach-Palenberg.

In the last season before the merger, both teams played in the district class , with the Palenberger as runner-up behind TuS Jahn Hilfarth, who made it to the state league , the highest amateur league on the Middle Rhine at the time. After an eleventh place in the promotion season, it went back down to the district class in 1952. This was followed by direct resurgence and in the 1954/55 season Germania Kirchberg was defeated 10-0. A year later, the VfR missed the qualification for the newly created Verbandsliga Mittelrhein , before the Übach-Palenberger in 1957 and 1958 were regional league runners-up behind SV Baesweiler 09 and Alemannia Mariadorf .

Finally, in 1959, they were promoted to the association league after the team was able to oust the amateurs of 1. FC Köln from first place on the last day of the match . Sports highlights of these years were sixth place in the 1966/67 season and the friendly game against the Ceylon national team in 1968, which ended in a 2-2 draw. Also in 1968 VfR was relegated to the regional league, had to start three years later in the district class and in 1975 slipped down to the district class. It only went up again in the 1980s. After two consecutive promotions, the club returned to the national league in 1983 and made it to the association league in 1985. After two placements in the midfield of the association league, it went back to the national league in 1988 as a knocked-down bottom in the table. Financial difficulties and the resignation of the entire board led to relegation.

Four years later it went down to the district class, before being promoted back to the state league in 1994. Three years later the VfR reached third place in the national league before the club plunged into great chaos. The main sponsor got out and the highly indebted club got into trouble with the tax office . The exclusion of the football department from the entire club was also under discussion. Finally, the VfR footballers continued to play in the district league A, from which they had to relegate in 2006. Since relegation in 2016, VfR Übach-Palenberg has been back in the district league B.

Stadion

The home stadium has been the Übachtal stadium since 1952 . It opened with a friendly between Alemannia Aachen and FC St. Pauli . In 1953 and 1955, the German women's national handball team played international matches against Austria and the Netherlands in the Übachtal stadium .
