content

Viacrucis Migrante - Way of the Cross of Migrants tells the stories of Central American migrants and lets them explain why they risk their lives on a journey into uncertainty.

The viewer accompanies them on their way to a migrant hostel run by a Franciscan order. But even in this safe place of the Catholic Church they do not come to rest. The protagonists meet fellow sufferers who have experienced deportations, assaults, sexual violence and attacks. Among them are women, families and transgender people who are more likely to apply for asylum in Mexico than risk the dangerous journey.

Extreme poverty and crime have caused migrants to leave their countries of origin. Her stories are about poverty, violence and discrimination in Central America. Most of them believe in God to help them survive discrimination and abuse. In front of the camera, they report on the unbearable situation in their homeland and the dangers that they - and they know - still face when traveling through Mexico: systematic checks by the police, deportations, humiliations, physical violence and kidnappings every year Hundreds of thousands fall victim.

They tell how their faith carries them through the martyrdom of the journey. They suffer, say the fathers at the inn, like Jesus on the way to the cross. This trust in God may seem naive to some viewers. In their descriptions, however, the migrants find clear words and combine their beliefs with global political issues. On the run from poverty and violence and in search of a better life, they feel they are right, even without papers. Accordingly, the film also portrays the commitment of Catholic clergymen who repeatedly risk their lives in their work for the migrants.

On Good Friday, the hostel organizes a demonstration to raise awareness among the Mexican population and to demand that migrants be treated with dignity by the migration police. At the same time, the migrants set off for the USA. They know about the dangers of the 1,700-kilometer journey. They carry their cross through Mexico. Nobody knows whether they will achieve their goal.
