Gordon Hamilton (glaciologist)

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Gordon Stuart Hamilton (born July 22, 1966 - October 22, 2016 on White Island , Antarctica ) was a Scottish glaciologist .

Life

Hamilton received his Bachelor of Science degree from the University of Aberdeen in 1988 and a Doctor of Philosophy from the University of Cambridge four years later . From 1992 to 1994 he was a postdoctoral fellow at the Norwegian Polar Institute . From 1994 to 2000 he worked at the Byrd Polar Research Center at Ohio State University as a research associate and from then on until 2005 as an assistant professor , then as an associate professor of glaciology at the Climate Change Institute at the University of Maine . He has also been a member of NASA's ASTER observation team since 2004 and an author at the Journal of Geophysical Research - Earth Surface since 2007 .

Hamilton worked as a glaciologist on both poles of the earth, both in Greenland , for example on the Helheim Glacier or the Kangerlussuaq Glacier , and in Antarctica . His special topic was the glacial melt caused by climate change and its effects. According to the university president, his research was more important than any other.

On October 22, 2016, he was traveling on White Island in Antarctica when his snowmobile fell about 30 meters into a crevasse . He could only be recovered dead.

He leaves behind a wife and two grown sons.

The Hamilton Glacier on the Edward VII Peninsula in Antarctica has been named after him since 2003.
