Vibberodden fyr (19th century)

Vibberodden fyr (or Viberodden fyrstasjon ) is a beacon in the municipality of Eigersund in the Fylke (province) Rogaland , Norway . It stands to the west of the southern entrance to "Sundet", the sound called " Eikundarsund " in Old Norse, between the island of Eigerøya and the mainland, and thus to the port of Egersund on the Dalane coast. Vibberodden fyr is thus a harbor access fire.

history

The former caretaker's house with the beacon on the roof and several small outbuildings (workshop, wash house with cistern for rainwater, toilet house) is located on the northern end of a spar only about 75 × 75 m in size, immediately south of the island of Eigerøya, the Viberodden (= hvit + berg + odden). It was put into operation in 1855, after the coastal fire Eigerøy fyr, which was inaugurated just a few kilometers northwest in 1854 . A lighthouse keeper family lived in the house until 1977 ; then the beacon was automated. The fire height is 22 m above high water. The fire has a light intensity of 4,500  cd and a range of 14.4 nautical miles .

Todays use

Today the facility is owned by the Friends of Viberodden Foundation, on the basis of a 30-year lease agreement with the Norwegian Kystverket (Coastal Administration ), which renovates and maintains the lighthouse and the outbuildings. The foundation consists of the Egersund Coastal Association, the Dalane Folk Museum and the Eigersund municipality.
