Vicente Jayme

Vicente "Ting" R. Jayme (born October 27, 1928 in Manila , † April 3, 2013 in the Philippines ) was a Filipino economic manager and politician who served as Secretary of Public Works and Highways during the presidency of Corazon Aquino and Highways ) and Finance Secretary , and served as Executive Director of the Asian Development Bank from 1990 to 1997 .

Life

Studies, Vice President of the PNB and President of the PDCP

After attending school, Jayme, descendant of the revolutionary Antonio Ledesma Jayme , studied economics at the Ateneo de Manila University , graduating with a master's (MA in Economics) and then worked as a director of Benpres Holdings Corporation.

He was then Vice President of the Philippine National Bank (PNB) before he succeeded James K. Paulding as President and Chief Executive Officer of the Private Development Corporation of the Philippines (PDCP) founded in August 1963 in March 1965. At the general assembly of the PDCP in 1976 he was elected President, before he was President and Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of the PDCP between 1984 and 1986 . During this time he was founding president of the World Federation of Development Financing Institutions (WFDFI ) in 1979 and was replaced in this role in 1980 by René Amichia from Ivory Coast . Between 1978 and 1980 he was a member, vice-chairman and chairman of the PSSC (Philippine Social Science Council).

Minister and Executive Director of the ADB

After the overthrow of the dictatorship of Ferdinand Marcos , Jayme, who was co-founder of the National Citizens' Movement for Free Elections (NAMFREL) with Jose S. Concepcion Jr. and an active supporter of the anti-Marcos EDSA revolution , became President Corazon in February 1986 Aquino was initially appointed Secretary of Public Works and Highways in their cabinet. After a cabinet reshuffle, he became Finance Secretary in 1987 and held this position until 1990. During this time, an honorary doctorate ( Hon. Doctor of Humane Letters ) was awarded in 1987 by the Ateneo de Manila University .

After resigning from the government, Jayme became Executive Director of the Manila- based Asian Development Bank (ADB) in 1990 and served until 1997. He was also intermittently director of the Management Association of the Philippines, director of the Philippine Chamber of Industries, director of Philippine Economic Society and Vice Chairman of the Asian Social Institute. For a time he was also honorary chairman of the National Executive Committee of the Bishops-Entrepreneur Conference for Human Development and a Fellow of the International Development Organization (IDA) of the World Bank .

Jayme, who in the course of his professional career was CEO or board member of around four companies in various industries such as banking, financial services, shipping companies, insurance, consulting, chemicals, steel and construction, was among other things a board member of Philequity, Inc. Vice President of The Philippine Rural Reconstruction Movement and member of the Advisory Board of the Center for Banking and Finance of the Asian Institute of Management.
