Victor Goybet

Victor-Louis Goybet (* 9. June 1865 in Lyon , France ; † 1947 ) was a French General de division in the First World War .

career

education

Victor Goybet initially studied at the Saint-Cyr Military School until 1885.

He then became Sous-lieutenant of the 30eme BCA (battalion chasseurs alpins), in Grenoble . He then attended the military school, which he graduated with honorable mention; therefore he was transferred to the General Staff (1898).

He spent almost his entire career in the mountain troops, an elite force in the French army. During the First World War he was injured in 1914 and 1916. As commander of the 101 e régiment d'infanterie , later commander of the 79th Brigade of the Chasseurs alpins , he took part in the Battle of Verdun . He was involved in the Battle of the Somme (1916). He became commander of the 65th Infantry Division and in 1918 pushed his troops as far as Mainz , where he marched in on December 9, 1918. After the armistice of Compiègne he was the first city commandant of Mainz.

Further career

Goybet was promoted to Général de brigadel in 1919 and Général de division in 1926.

family

Colonel Charles Goybet, born in 1898, was his son. Officer of the Legion of Honor, 1914–1918 ( Battle of the Aisne ) and 1939–1945 (Campagne de Norvège).
