Victor Felix Karl Kremser (born May 20, 1858 in Ratibor ; † July 27, 1909 in Berlin ) was a German astronomer and meteorologist .

Life

Victor Kremser studied astronomy , mathematics and natural sciences at the University of Breslau from 1877 . In 1880 he became an assistant at the university's climate station, which was connected to the Prussian observation network. In 1882 Gustav Hellmann , the interim director of the Royal Prussian Meteorological Institute, brought him to Berlin. Kremser received his doctorate in 1883 in Breslau with the dissertation The path of the second Comet from 1879 to Dr. phil. In one thesis of this work he pointed out the importance of the exploration of the atmosphere for the progress of astronomy. In the following years he was to devote himself to this task. In February 1887 he joined the German Association for the Promotion of Airship Travel with other Berlin meteorologists such as Richard Assmann and Adolf Sprung . They managed to get the support of the association for an ambitious ten-year program to research the atmosphere with the help of free balloons. On June 23, 1888, the first of a total of 65 manned scientific flights by the association took place. On board the Herder balloon were Victor Kremser and Hans Bartsch von Sigsfeld as scientific observers and the military airship operator Richard Opitz (1855-1892) as balloonists.

In 1892 Kremser became head of the climate department of the Royal Prussian Meteorological Institute.

He wrote numerous climate descriptions of German garrison and university towns as well as of the north German floodplains. From 1891 to 1896 he edited the magazine for airship travel and physics of the atmosphere .
