The Victoria Park is a football stadium in Hartlepool , United Kingdom . It has been the home of Hartlepool United , a football club currently playing in Football League One , since 1908 . It was opened in 1886 and holds 7,787 spectators.

history

The site was previously used as a limestone quarry . At that time the land of today's stadium bought the Rugby Club West Hartlepool Rugby Football Club from the railway company North Eastern Railway to build on a rugby stadium. The name goes back to the 60th jubilee of Queen Victoria ; The stadium was named Victoria Park in her honor . In 1908, West Hartlepool Rugby Football Club broke and left the stadium. Shortly thereafter, the Hartlepools United Football Athletic Company Limited took over the venue and the Hartlepool United club was founded.

During the First World War , the stadium was bombed by a German zeppelin in 1916 , and the main stand was destroyed. As a temporary replacement, a wooden grandstand was built with the intention of building a larger grandstand again later. After the war, the association demanded damages from the German government , but this was unsuccessful. The wooden grandstand remained until the late 1980s and was demolished after the Valley Parade fire disaster in Bradford . In its place container buildings were erected in which u. a. the changing rooms and club offices were housed.

In 1995 the new main grandstand, the Cyril Knowles stand , was built. It is named after the former player Cyril Knowles , who played for Tottenham Hotspur for twelve years and coached Hartlepool United from 1989 to 1991. He died on 30 August 1991, only 47 years to cancer . The seating area has VIP boxes in the upper part and offers 1,599 covered seats for home fans. Also in the 1990s, the Rink End was added in the north with 964 covered seats for the guest fans. The Town End is a covered standing room with 1,775 seats for Hartlepool supporters. The lower part of the Niramax stand has 1,832 uncovered standing places; the upper area has 1,617 covered seats and the press stand.
