description

The multi-column cinquefoil is a perennial herbaceous plant . The half-rosette plant has a short-branched "root stock" that is densely covered with brownish leaf remains. The arching, rising stems reach a height of 3 to 40 centimeters. They are branched in the upper half and have few leaves, but many-flowered and, like the petioles up to 5 centimeters long, closely hairy. The leaves are pinnate to finger-like, the sections are deeply pinnate with a drawn-down edge. The upper side of the leaf is green and hairy, the underside densely gray-tomentose. There are stipules present.

The flower stalks are 1.5 to 2.5 cm long. The hermaphroditic, radial symmetry flowers measure 8 to 15 millimeters in diameter and are five-fold. The five sepals are outside and the outer calyx is hairy close-fitting. The five yellow, deeply edged petals tower above the calyx.

Flowering time is from July to August. The number of chromosomes is 2n = 28.

Occurrence

This species is distributed arctic-alpine, the disjoint distribution area includes Scandinavia as well as the Alps , the Pyrenees , North America and China. It occurs at altitudes of 2200 to 3000 meters especially under overhanging rocks and is considered rare. Data from the Urals refer to Potentilla tergemina Soják .

In Switzerland, the species occurs only in the canton of Valais. It is absent in Germany and Austria, but occurs in South Tyrol.
