The Vierzehnnothelferkirche is a cemetery chapel in the north of the town of Hirschau in the district of Amberg-Sulzbach in the Upper Palatinate in Bavaria , whose beginnings go back to the 15th century. The chapel dedicated to the fourteen helpers in need is likely to have received its current appearance at the end of the 17th century.

history

The beginnings of the Vierzehnnothelferkirche go back to the 15th century, when the plague raged in Hirschau . The church was first mentioned in a document in 1522. In 1835, fragments of a stone pulpit erected outdoors were still there. In 1685 the Church of the Fourteen Holy Helpers was designated as dilapidated.

The tower was built in 1884.

In 1972, a figure of Eustachius, angel heads with foliage on the doors and the evangelists attached to the pulpit and the teaching savior were stolen from the Church of the Fourteen Holy Helpers. To date, these elements have not reappeared. Therefore the figures had to be replaced. In 1978 the exterior renovation of the Church of the Fourteen Holy Helpers was carried out by the church painting company Hugo Preis from Parsberg . The folk altar and ambo were also rebuilt by the Hugo Preis company in 1984 as part of a renovation initiated by pastor Edwin Völkl .

Pilgrimage

Before the Reformation and into the 18th century, the church was a much-visited pilgrimage church. Chronicles testify that on the feast of the Visitation of the Virgin Mary , the patronage of the Church of the Fourteen Holy Helpers, pilgrims flocked in droves. For example, the "Ungelts-, Gegen- und Stadtschreiber" (Ungelts, Gegen- und Stadtschreiber), Johann Jakob Weinzierl wrote to the Amberg sculptor Johann Hirschl in 1711:

"Because there was an old and bad altar in it at that time and nevertheless special devotion is carried by the people to the saints (i.e. the 14 helpers in need), to gain complete indulgence every year on the feast of Our Women Visitation, various gentlemen clergymen come there proceßionaliter and are commonly counted among 1200 to 1300 communicants. "

The last evidence of a pilgrimage comes from the year 1792. In 2001 the local folk and costume association revived the tradition. Since then there has been a pilgrimage every year.

Facility

altar

The high altar, donated by the town clerk Johann Jakob Weinzierl and created in 1710 by the Amberg artist Johann Hirschl, is richly decorated with acanthus carvings and occupies the entire east wall and is dedicated to the fourteen helpers in need. The fourteen emergency helpers are arranged in two groups of seven. In addition to the fourteen helpers in need, another four figures can be seen on the altar: Saints Maria and Florian and the plague saints Rochus and Sebastian . The figures in the niches of the chancel were purchased in the 1980s. Before that, the niches were empty. The figure of St. Francis of Assisi was purchased in 1984. The figures of Maria Theresa von Jesus Gerhardinger and Saint Elisabeth were donated by the Women's Association in 1988.

Side altars

The side altars date from around 1700. On the left, the Adoration of the Shepherds is depicted, framed by the holy deacons Stephen and Laurentius . The right altarpiece shows the Descent from the Cross . This picture is framed by St. Francis Xavier and St. Ignatius of Loyola .

The organ from 1764 comes from Johann Adam Funtsch from Amberg. In 1984 the pipework was only available for seven registers, so three new registers were installed by the organ builder Johann Rickert from Regensburg . The organ is one of the most important historical works in the Upper Palatinate.

The grille was remade in 1984 by Peter Fischer from Freudenberg .
