Viesca is a place with almost 4,000 inhabitants in the southwest of the Mexican state Coahuila ; it is the administrative seat of the municipality of the same name and has been classified as Pueblo Mágico since 2012 .

Location and climate

Viesca is located in the southwest of the largely desert or semi-desert state of Coahuila at an altitude of approx. 1100  m ; About 1 km east of the village is the depression of a lake that only contains water after heavy or prolonged rainfall. The distance to the east located city of Saltillo is about 240 km (driving distance); the city of Torreón is just 92 km to the northwest. In 1731 the place was founded as San José y Santiago del Alamo . In the 1830s he was named San José de Viesca in honor of the first governor of the newly created state of Coahuila and Texas in 1824 .
