Vigilio de Inama

Vigilio von Inama (* December 2, 1835 in Trento , † December 12, 1912 in Milan ; also Vigilio de Inama and Vigilio Inama ; baptismal name was Giovanni , after the death of his father in 1837 he was called Vigilio) was an Austrian-Italian classical philologist and historian , epigraphist and, for Italy, the Roman scholar of ancient Greece .

Life

Vigilio Inama from the known Nonstaler family Inama the son of the same name was K. k. Collegial councilor at the Trento court and distantly related to the statistician Theodor Inama von Sternegg . After high school in Trento, he studied at the universities of Innsbruck , Prague , Munich and Padua , where he qualified as a classical Dr. phil. received his doctorate.

After brief teaching at the grammar school in Trento from 1859 to 1860, he went to teach at the "Collegio Calchi Taeggi" in Milan in 1861. In 1866 he took part in Garibaldi's Bersaglieri Volunteer Corps in the Third Italian War of Independence against Austria and received the silver medal for bravery in Vezza d'Oglio . Inama showed his patriotic attitude and his high level of work also on his further life.

When he returned to Milan, he was called to the Accademia scientifico-letteraria , founded in 1859 , where he taught Greek literature to three generations of Italians for 52 years. An ardent admirer of the art, life and thought of ancient Greece , he dedicated his life to studying the classical antiquity of that country. The Greek grammar he wrote and the practical exercises for the use of Greek grammar in secondary schools were very successful and had multiple editions.

He intensified his studies of Greek and published a long series of historical and literary handbooks on the history of Greek literature, the Greek poets, the history of classical Greek and Latin philosophy, ancient Greece, and the Greek and Roman theater, and dedicated to his last work to the poet Homer .

As president, he headed the royal Accademia scientifico-letteraria for a quarter of a century (1876-1903) and held the functions of president (from 1903) and later vice-president of the royal Istituto Lombardo di Scienze e Lettere . Inama was a member of the Supreme State Education Council Consiglio superiore della pubblica istruzione and at the provincial level of the Consiglio scolastico provinziale as well as a member of the Accademia Roveretana degli Agiati and several other Italian and foreign academies.

Vigiolio Inama was also an active promoter of tourism and gymnastics. He was a member of the Società degli Alpinisti Tridentini since his youth and founded and directed the "Società ginnastica Forza e Coraggio" p. 99 in Milan from 1870 to 1890 . He remains known to posterity through his numerous works in the field of Greek language and literature.

In addition, he devoted his studies to the history of Trento, especially in his homeland, the Val di Non, and made a contribution to popularizing archeology.

Afterlife

In 1949, at the will of his nephew Ottone de Betta Inama di Castel Malgolo , the great-grandchildren of Vigilio Inama put a plaque on the ancestral home of the Inama von Sternfeld family branch in Fondo in the upper Val di Non , reminding us that Vigilio liked to relax here in the summer months.
