Life

Vijay Bahuguna was born on February 28, 1947 in Allahabad in the Indian state of Uttar Pradesh . His father Hemwati Nandan Bahuguna was a member of the Indian independence movement and chief minister of Uttar Pradesh for the Congress Party from 1973 to 1975 . His sister Rita Joshi is also a congress politician in Uttar Pradesh. In addition, the former Chief Minister Uttarakhands, BC Khanduri of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), is a cousin of Bahuguna. Vijay Bahuguna studied law at Allahabad University and graduated with a Bachelor of Laws .

In February 2007, Vijay Bahuguna was elected to the Lok Sabha , the pan-Indian lower house, in a by-election in the constituency of Tehri Garhwal in the state of Uttarakhand . In the 2009 election he defended his constituency.

On March 13, 2012, Vijay Bahuguna became the Chief Minister of Uttarakhand. In the previous state election, the Congress Party emerged as the strongest party and secured a parliamentary majority with the support of three independent MPs and one MP from the regional party Uttarakhand Kranti Dal . After much speculation about who should hold the office of chief minister, Vijay Bahuguna was chosen as a compromise candidate. His inauguration was accompanied by internal party tensions caused by the empty aspirants for the post of chief minister.

During the reign of Bahuguna, Uttarakhand experienced a devastating flood disaster in June 2013 with over 5,000 dead. After the flood, Bahuguna was blamed for poor crisis management . On January 31, 2014, Vijay Bahuguna resigned from the post of Chief Minister of Uttarakhand. The resignation came under pressure from the Congress leadership, which hoped to improve their chances for the upcoming all-India parliamentary elections by replacing the unpopular Bahuguna. His party colleague, Federal Minister Harish Rawat , was chosen to succeed Bahuguna . Rawat was one of the candidates for the post of Chief Minister back in 2012. On the day of his resignation, Bahuguna granted himself a state-owned property in Dehradun as his residence.
