Ewald Jarmer
Ewald Jarmer (born August 12, 1942 in Rostitz, Sudetenland ) is a former German boxer . He was a participant in the 1972 Olympic Games in Munich and three-time champion of the amateurs of the Federal Republic of Germany in the middleweight division .
Career
Ewald Jarmer was born in the Sudetenland and came to the Federal Republic of Germany following the expulsion of the German population after the Second World War and settled in Selb / Upper Franconia . There he attended school and learned the trade of a motor vehicle mechanic. Later he trained to become a programmer. In 1959, at the age of 17, he started boxing at the BC Olympia Selb . His coach there was Joachim Bischof. In 1960 he was Bavarian junior champion and then multiple Bavarian champion in the senior middleweight division. Ewald Jarmer later boxed for the BC Bavaria Rosenheim and the Velberter BC .
In 1966 he took part in the German championship, but lost in the quarter-finals against Ewald Wichert on points and took 5th place. In the same year he also played his first international match. In Berlin he came to a point victory over Bod Reed from the United States. In the years that followed he often competed in international competitions up to 1973 and was often victorious.
At the German championships he lost again to Ewald Wichert in the quarter-finals in 1967. In 1968 he made it to the semi-finals and lost to Rudi Hornig there . Also in 1969 he was defeated by Rudi Hornig, but only in the final, with which he became German runner-up champion. In the years 1970 to 1972 Ewald Jarmer managed to become German middleweight champion three times in a row. He defeated Gerd Bauer on points in 1970, Hans-Georg Mielich in 1971 by breaking off in the 2nd round and in 1972 Heinz Peters on points.
In 1969 Ewald Jarmer was used in the middleweight division at the European Championships in Bucharest . He lost there in the round of 16 against Mate Parlov , Yugoslavia , one of the best amateur boxers of those years, on points and came in 9th place. He also competed in the 1971 European Championship in Madrid . He lost in the round of the last "32" against Raimoa Virtanen from Finland on points and only reached 17th place. At the 1972 Olympic Games in Munich , he met the US co-favorite Marvin Johnson in the round of 16 , against whom he had a good fight, but which he lost on points. He reached a 9th place.
The plight of the German amateur boxers of those years can be seen in the international career of Ewald Jarmer. The German Amateur Boxing Association had completely missed the mark and played a huge number of international matches, but no international tournaments. In the leading boxing nations at the time, almost all of which came from the former Eastern Bloc, a large number of international tournaments were played in those years, in which the boxers usually had to fight three or four fights and therefore they were able to get the hardship there they could then play at the international championships.
