Vijay Raghunath Pandharipande (born August 7, 1940 in Nagpur , India , † January 3, 2006 in Boston ) was an Indian-American theoretical nuclear physicist.

Life

Pandharipande studied at the University of Nagpur (Bachelor 1959, Master 1961). He then went to the Tata Institute of Fundamental Research and received his PhD from the University of Bombay in 1969 . From 1969 to 1971 he was a post-doc at the Niels Bohr Institute in Copenhagen and at Cornell University with Hans Bethe . In 1972 he went to the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign as a Research Associate , where he became Assistant Professor in 1973, Associate Professor in 1974 and Professor in 1977. He was a member of the University's Center for Advanced Study. From 1983 he was also at the Argonne National Laboratory .

Pandharipande was an internationally recognized expert on many-particle theory in nuclear physics, who pursued a program to systematically derive properties of light nuclei from realistic two- and three-nucleon forces using the Monte Carlo method he developed with a variation approach. He also pursued applications to neutron stars and also studied other quantum liquids such as liquid helium.

He was a fellow of the American Physical Society and the Indian Physical Society. In 1999 he received the Tom W. Bonner Prize for Nuclear Physics . From 1991 to 1994 he was co-editor of Physical Review C and was also one of the editors of Journal of Physics G and Nuclear Physics .

He had been married since 1966 and had a son and a daughter.

His students include Joseph Carlson , Robert B. Wiringa .
