Viktor Hammer (sculptor)

Viktor Josef Hammer (born June 19, 1913 in Vienna ; † May 23, 1986 there ) was an Austrian sculptor.

Life

Viktor Hammer was born in Vienna- Ottakring as the son of the bronze goods manufacturer Josef Hammer and his wife, Josefa Hofer. In 1927, at the age of 14, he started working as an apprentice in his father's workshop in Vienna-Neubau . There he learned the craft of bronze and metal goods manufacturer, belt maker and chaser . In December 1935, he passed the master craftsman exams for these four trades.

From 1933 to 1934 Viktor Hammer took the opportunity to sit in on sculpture for two semesters with his teacher from the vocational school, Josef Müllner , at the Academy of Fine Arts Vienna on Schillerplatz . In 1934 he then went on to study for six semesters. Hammer received his final examination as an academic sculptor for marble, stone and wood on July 1, 1938. Although the Second World War had already started, he was able to take his diploma examination at the Academy in November 1941.

After the death of his father, Viktor Hammer and his brother Josef Hammer took over the father's bronze goods production and handicraft workshop. He worked in his own studios in Vienna-Neubau and in the state studio in the Wiener Krieau and made a name for himself after 1945 by restoring numerous large bronze sculptures damaged by the effects of the war on public buildings in Vienna.

With his wife Pauline he had two daughters Christina and Monika. He died on May 23, 1986 in Vienna and was buried at the Ottakringer Friedhof (group 29, row 14, no. 35).

Honors

In 1960 he became a member of the Wiener Künstlerhausverein and received the professional title of Professor on July 28, 1967 . On May 4, 1973 he received the Austrian Cross of Honor for Science and Art, First Class . His area of ​​activity was limited to Vienna and eastern Austria.
