Johann Soelch (also: Johann Sölch ; born October 16, 1883 in Penzing ; † September 10, 1951 in Kitzbühel , Tyrol) was an Austrian geographer , rector of the University of Vienna and president of the Austrian Geographical Society .

Life

Johann Sölch was a son of the couple Johann Georg Sölch (1852-1934), director of the Austrian school book publisher, who came from Gehaag in Bohemia, and Anna Franke (1861-1924), daughter of the higher regional judge Ignaz Franke in Brno .

Sölch was a student at the University of Vienna and received his doctorate in philosophy under Albrecht Penck in 1906; it followed in 1917 the habilitation in Graz. From 1920 to 1928 Johann Sölch was professor for physical geography at the University of Innsbruck - where Hans Kinzl did his doctorate with him - and set up a seminar for geography of the Alps . As the successor to Alfred Hettner , he was full professor at the University of Heidelberg from 1932 to 1935 , at the University of Vienna from 1935 and secretary of the mathematical and natural science class of the Austrian Academy of Sciences ; in 1947 and 1948 he was rector of the University of Vienna and in 1951 president of the Austrian Geographical Society. From 1932 he was a member of the Heidelberg Academy of Sciences . His grave is in the Vienna Central Cemetery .

Sölch had a daughter Ilse Sölch (* 1909 in Vienna), scientific publications in geographical areas, a. a. "The geography of the Issel region in East Tyrol".

Honors

In Vienna- Floridsdorf , Sölchgasse was named after him in 1954 and his bust was erected on the campus of the University of Vienna. The Sölch Glacier on the Antarctic Peninsula also bears his name.
