Life

Viktor Zachariae, son of the professor of law in Göttingen and from 1848/49 member of the Frankfurt National Assembly Dr. jur. Heinrich Albert Zachariae began studying medicine in Göttingen after completing his school education in Hanover. Together with Eduard Kreuzhage , his brother Karl, Heinrich Adolph and four other friends, he founded the Georgia-Augusta student choir in Göttingen in 1860 . In 1865 he was promoted to Dr. med. doctorate and passed the state medical examination in Hanover. He then worked as a general practitioner in various places, mainly in the southern area of the Kingdom of Hanover and the Duchy of Braunschweig. His special scientific interest was the medicinal effects and use of therapeutic baths . Since the mid-1880s, he had been corresponding with leading experts on the medical principles of hydrotherapy and the establishment of therapeutic baths, such as the physician and anatomist Johann Friedrich Sigmund Merkel (1845-1919).

In 1890 he was elected mayor of Wildemann; In 1895 he was re-elected for 12 years. He held the office for over ten years until his sudden death.

In Wildemann, the smallest of the seven mining towns in the Upper Harz , - as in the entire region - mining gradually declined at the end of the 20th century. At the same time, tourism gained in importance. On the way to the health resort, it was an advantage for Wildemann that Viktor Zachariae had a house rebuilt and bath tubs installed in it; he published on the beneficial effects of salt and pine needle baths. A corresponding offer prompted foreign guests to take cures in Wildemann. The city council described the deceased mayor in an obituary as a "man of upright, honest character, under whose dutiful official activity the community rose and the place could develop to its height as a health resort". As the mayor of the dying mining village of Wildemann, he made a decisive contribution to the economic survival by using his medical knowledge and experience in water cures to initiate successful economic restructuring and to open up new opportunities for the population to work.
