Vila Franca da Beira is a locality and former municipality ( freguesia ) in the Portuguese district ( concelho ) of Oliveira do Hospital . On June 30, 2011 the community had 465 inhabitants on an area of 7 km². Since 2013 it has been part of the newly created municipality of Ervedal e Vila Franca da Beira .

history

Megalithic finds prove a very old settlement of the area by humans. In 1190, the current location was first documented, in a deed of purchase from Queen Dulce , wife of King Sancho I. In 1606, the location came to the University of Coimbra until it returned to the crown in the 19th century. The place also always belonged to the municipality of Ervedal until it became an independent municipality on May 23, 1988.

As part of the extensive public austerity measures and the announced amalgamation of numerous municipalities across the country, the resolution of the independent municipality of Vila Franca da Beira was also decided. The district administration rejected the upcoming resolutions.

In the course of the local reorganization of Portugal after the local elections on September 29, 2013, the municipality of Vila Franca da Beira was finally merged with Ervedal to form the new municipality of União das Freguesias de Ervedal e Vila Franca da Beira . Ervedal became the seat of the new community.
