The Villa Boa Vista (also Casa Mann , Fazenda Boa Vista ) is a listed villa in Paraty on the coast of the South Atlantic in Brazil . It is the birthplace of Julia da Silva-Bruhns , called Dodo, the wife of Lübeck Senator Thomas Johann Heinrich Mann and mother of the writers Thomas Mann and Heinrich Mann , the actress Carla Mann , the author Viktor Mann and Julia Löhr .

history

Johann Ludwig Hermann Bruhns (1821–1893), who emigrated to Brazil from Lübeck at the age of sixteen, married Maria Luísa da Silva, the then fifteen-year-old Brazilian, daughter of a wealthy Brazilian planter from Angra dos Reis , in 1847 . Bruhns ran sugar cane plantations and lived with his family on the Fazenda Boa Vista with direct access to the sea with its own palm-lined beach. Julia da Silva-Bruhns was born in Villa Boa Vista in 1851. She spent the first seven years of her childhood there. When his wife Maria Luísa died at the age of twenty-eight giving birth to their sixth child, Bruhns sent his children to Lübeck for training. Julia da Silva-Bruhns recorded her childhood experiences in Brazil in 1903; her daughter Julia gave it in 1958 under the title From Dodo's Childhood. Memories. out.

The building had changing owners. The psychologist and writer Frido Mann , a great-grandson of Julia da Silva-Bruhns, has been trying since 1995 to save the decaying building and set up a cultural center in it. In 1996 he was the first member of the Mann family to follow in the footsteps of his ancestors in Brazil and founded the “Casa Mann” association. The current ownership structure is unclear. Apparently the villa belongs to a company from São Paulo . Its owners, reported the German consul general in Rio de Janeiro , Hermann Erath , made high financial demands for a sale in 2011 .

In 2002 the villa was threatened with demolition because a holiday complex was to be built on the site. The monument protection prevented this.
