The Villa Engelmann in Halle (Saale) , Neuwerk 6, is a bourgeois residential building built in 1906 in the neo-baroque style. The villa is listed in the register of monuments of the city of Halle under registration number 094 04891.

location

The villa is located in the northern city center district on a hill above the Mühlgraben. Until 1914, the villa had the address Am Kirchtor 5a, as the construction of the Ringstrasse Neuwerk was still being planned. The scenic street with the character of an avenue and on a hillside, named after the medieval Neuwerk monastery , is today primarily characterized by mansions and houses built up to the end of the 1920s.

Building history and description

The mansion was built by the manor and rentier Alwin Engelmann, who lived on his income from investments and the leasing of land. He won Hermann Pfeiffer as an architect, who had previously built a number of representative residential buildings. It is noticeable that Engelmann had a splendid neo-baroque property built at a time when Art Nouveau and the forerunners of New Building were setting the future direction. Presumably Engelmann intended to place himself as a bourgeois in the tradition of the nobility in order to gain social recognition and attention.

Hermann Pfeiffer created a representative two-story plastered building in the formal language of baroque pleasure palaces , which stands out in the villa architecture of Halle. The building, which rises on a massive porphyry plinth, is characterized primarily by its bay windows, risalits , the arbor with pillars and pilasters as well as the rich stucco decor . The coat of arms in the attic represents a rural scene and is presumably intended to illustrate the client's status as a manor owner. A large park and the originally preserved wrought iron fence complete the ensemble.

Further use

Alwin Engelmann probably died in 1913. From 1914, his widow F. Engelmann, Reindeer, was the owner of the villa. In 1926 the villa was occupied by seven tenants, the widow's residence was in Flensburg. Until 1943 she was entered as the owner in the incomplete address books. In the last published address book for 1950, "Engelmann's heirs" appear as the house owner. 12 tenants lived in the house at that time.

In 2008, the attempt to purchase the now uninhabited villa by the art college , which is based on the neighboring property of Villa Steckner and wanted to set up its university library, failed . In 2014 it was finally refurbished for residential purposes by a private investor.
