Vincenzo Capirola
Vincenzo Capirola (* 1474 in Brescia ; † after 1548 there ) was an Italian lutenist and composer.
life and work
Capirola came from a wealthy family. It can be traced back to Brescia in 1489, 1498 and 1548, and in Venice in 1517. It is believed that Capirola could have visited Henry VIII's court in 1515 .
One of Capirola's students wrote the so-called “Capirola Lute Book” between 1515 and 1520 in Venice, a richly illustrated manuscript that not only contains compositions but also information on playing technique in the foreword and thus provides important information about lute playing during the Italian Renaissance .
Capirola's work itself is quite heterogeneous and contains both easy and highly virtuoso pieces. It includes 43 ricercari , dances and intavolations of vocal compositions by Martin Agricola , Jacob Obrecht , Josquin Desprez , Marco Cara and others. The Ricercari often alternate between toccata-like passages and three-part counterpoint .
