ancestry

Fini came from a Venetian noble family, whose lands and goods were, however, on the island of Cyprus , which belonged to Venice from 1489 to 1571 . When the Turks were preparing to conquer the island, the Fini family supported the necessary defense measures financially and organizationally. Demetrio de Fini and four of his sons (Leondio, Manuel, Florio, Luigio) were killed in defense of Nicosia . Demetrios' youngest son, Emanuele, left Cyprus soon after the city fell in 1571 and settled in Venice. At first he must have lived there in very poor conditions. His sons, on the other hand, except Demetrio, who died young, Vincenzo, Giovanni and Girolamo soon rose to influential offices there. The family played an important role in Venice in the 17th century.

Ascent in Venice

Vincenzo was the one who quickly made it so that the family soon regained wealth and prestige. He studied law and embarked on a legal career. On December 12, 1649 he was accepted into the patriciate of Venice. In return he donated 200,000 ducats to the republic on the occasion of the war for Candia . He also financially supported his siblings and his father, who in 1629 and 1633 acquired the lords of Jablanitz and Guttenegg in Innerkrain and then received them as a fief from Emperor Ferdinand II . Vincenzo Fini also held the office of Solicitadore di Palazzo and was avvocato al magistro della giustizia vecchia. On August 29, 1658 he was appointed procurator of San Marco di Citra. Thus he got into an office with great political influence, which was also associated with high prestige. Vincenzo certified on February 29, 1660 (notarial will b. 152 n.123).

Fini's brother Girolamo (born August 1, 1621 in Venice, † February 15, 1686 there), became patrician of Venice together with Vincenzo. As procurator and protector of the Church of San Moisè , he committed himself in 1668 to have the facade of the church renovated (source: Nicolaus Coleti: Monumenta ecclesiae venetae Sancti Moysis; Venetiis MDCCLVIII (1758), pp. 247–248).

Monument to the Fini family in San Moisè

With the renovation of the facade of the Church of San Moisè , the Fini and especially Vincenzo Fini have erected a sublime monument. The church dates from the 8th century, but was initially dedicated to San Vittore (St. Victor). It was rebuilt in 1632 and renamed San Moisè. The facade is decorated with three busts and inscriptions above the three entrances:
