from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Vincenzo de Grandis (born April 6, 1631 in Ostra ; † August 4, 1708 ibid) was an Italian singer (tenor), conductor and composer .

Life

Vincenzo de Grandis came from the counts of the de Grandis family from Montalboddo (today's Ostra) and entered the clergy at the age of 19; he was ordained a priest in 1652 or 1653. He probably received his musical training from his uncle Vincenzo de Grandis ( 1577–1646) in Rome, who was also a priest and appeared as a composer almost exclusively of sacred works.

Vincenzo de Grandis initially worked as Kapellmeister in Rome , but at that time was already working for the Duke of Braunschweig-Lüneburg in Hanover , recruiting and training musicians for his court orchestra.

Between 1661 and 1665 he worked as a singer. In 1674 de Grandis was given the position of Hofkapellmeister in Hanover. He worked here with considerable artistic success, but had to leave the city after the death of Duke Johann Friedrich in 1680. Afterwards he held positions as Kapellmeister in Modena and Loreto before he retired to his native city.

He created an opera , several oratorios and motets, and some secular vocal works. Even during his lifetime, his works were highly valued for their expressiveness and compositional quality. In some of his solo cantatas he addressed, in an almost romantic manner, some bitter experiences from his time at the court in Hanover, where he had been sentenced to prison for some time - obviously for no reason.
