Vini sinotoi is an extinct species of lory from the genus Maidloris ( Vini ). It occurred on the Marquesas and on Huahine . The art epithet honors the American anthropologist Yosihiko H. Sinoto from the Bernice P. Bishop Museum in Honolulu , Hawaii , who uncovered the holotype on Ua Huka in July 1964.

features

The holotype is a complete tarsometatarsus from the Hane deposit on Ua Huka. In addition to other bone finds by Yosihiko H. Sinoto in the Hane deposit in 1964 and 1965, additional subfossil material was discovered in 1967 by Peter Bellwood in the Hanatekua deposit on Hiva Oa and in 1985 by Barry Vladimir Rolett in the Hanamiai deposit on Tahuata . Material is also known from the Fa'ahia site on the island of Huahine . The finds classified as paratypes consist of seven raven bones, a shoulder blade, five humerus bones, 34 tibiotarsi , 49 tarsometatarsi, a toe bone, a rostrum, two square legs, four upper jaws, three sternum bones and a carpometacarpus. On the basis of the tarsometatarsus lengths from 21.6 to 24.0 mm and the tibiotarsus lengths from 31.3 to 33.4 mm, it is assumed that Vini sinotoi represented the largest species of the Maidloris.

die out

Since the material was found in the stratigraphically identical deposits as the bones of the also extinct species Vini vidivici , an extinction period between 1000 and 1200 AD is assumed, shortly after the Marquesas were settled for the first time.
