Viola cretica is a species of the violet genus( Viola ).

features

Viola cretica is a perennial rosette hemicryptophyte that reaches heights of 5 to 15 centimeters. The leaves are pointed, egg-shaped and wire-haired. The stipules are four to eight times as long as they are wide, linear-lanceolate and long fringed. The crown is colored purple. The lower petal is 12 to 15 millimeters long. The spur is 3 millimeters long. The lateral petals are beardless.

The flowering period extends from March to May.

The number of chromosomes is 2n = 20.

Occurrence

Viola cretica is endemic to Crete . It occurs in forests, on stony pastures, on river beds and at springs at altitudes of 800 to 1800 meters (rarely more than 100 meters).

Systematics

There are two subspecies :

  • Viola cretica subsp. cretica : the plant is hairy. The capsule and the edge of the sepals are hairy. The subspecies occurs in the Lefka Ori , the Ida Mountains and the Dikti Mountains .
  • Viola cretica subsp. glabra Tinakou : The plant is bald or only absent- mindedly short-haired. The sepals and the capsule are bare. The subspecies occurs in the Ida Mountains and in the Dikti Mountains.
