The Violet petunia ( Petunia integrifolia , syn. Petunia violacea ) is a plant type from the genus of petunia ( Petunia ) in the family of the nightshade family (Solanaceae).

description

The violet petunia is a herbaceous plant up to 60 cm high, which branches from the base and has upright to creeping, often winged stems . The stems are densely hairy and sticky and smell aromatic. The leaves are egg-shaped, lanceolate or spatulate and 2 to 5 cm long. They are pointed to the front, narrowed towards the base, both leaf surfaces are hairy tomentose. The petiole is very short or not at all pronounced.

The inflorescences are on up to 30 cm long peduncle , on which are herbaceous, 0.5 to 2 cm long bracts in pairs . The flower stalks are 1 to 4 cm long and elongate on the fruit. The calyx is divided into unequal calyx lobes up to near the base, which can be 8 to 15 mm long, stand upright or protruding and enlarge on the fruit. The crown is 2 to 5 cm long and shaped like a saucer. The corolla-tube is narrow and strongly veined, the outside is hairy with bristles, the inside is hairless. The coronet is divided into five rounded lobes that are hairy on the outside along the veins. The five stamens come in three sizes: two long, two medium-sized, and one short. The stamens are bent like knees, hairless and start about in the lower third of the corolla tube. The anthers resemble each other, are elliptical and about 3 mm long. The ovary is elongated-conical and hairless. The stylus is hairless and bent like a knee at the tip. The scar only partially extends beyond the crown and is bilobed.

The fruit is a straw-colored capsule about 10 mm long . The fine seeds are spherical-prismatic, small-pitted and dark brown.

The number of chromosomes is 2n = 14.

Systematics

Two subspecies are distinguished within the species:

  • Petunia integrifolia subsp. integrifolia
  • Petunia integrifolia subsp. depauperata (REFr.) Stehmann

The species is one of the parent species of the garden petunia ( Petunia × hybrida ).

Occurrence

The species is native to Brazil .
