features

Macroscopic features

The young mushroom is clearly purple in color on the hat and lamellae as well as on the stem. With increasing age, the color changes to brownish. The thick-fleshed hat, often brown from the beginning, is between 5 and 15 cm wide and initially hemispherical in shape, later spread out flat and bent into a wavy shape. The strong, cylindrical to club-shaped violet stem is up to 3 cm thick, 12 cm long and has white-silver longitudinal fibers on its surface. The edge is rolled up for a long time. The lamellas, which are bulging on the handle, can be easily removed, are almost crowded and are gray-purple. The meat is soft, tender and slightly purple. The smell is pleasantly spicy and aromatic, the taste is mildly nutty. The spore powder is reddish in color.

Microscopic features

The elliptical and colorless spores measure 6.5–8.5 × 4–5 µm.

Species delimitation

The cobweb-like remains of the veil on the stalk of the purple-spotted clubfoot are colored rust-brown by the spore powder.

The purple red chalk knight can be confused with the purple-spotted clubfoot / mucous head ( Cortinarius purpurascens ). The doppelganger, classified by various authors as edible or inedible, can easily be distinguished by the lack of a sweetish smell, the cobweb-like veil and the rust-brown spore powder.

ecology

The violet knight grows from September to late autumn in coniferous and deciduous forests as well as on meadows and in gardens. He prefers humus soils. It is usually found in large numbers in large witch rings and rows.
