Virginia City is a place in the southwest of the US state Montana with 130 inhabitants, located in Madison County , whose county seat he is.
history
In May 1863 the first gold discoveries were made in what is now Virginia City. As a result, 320 acres of land were determined for a city to be built, which was originally to be called "Varina", but whose name ultimately became "Virginia". The population in the area known as Alder Gulch was already about 9,000 people by 1864, most of them in Virginia City. In 1865, after Bannack , which was subsequently gradually abandoned , Virginia City became the new capital of what was then Montana Territory for ten years .
The mining in the region was about 1875 again considerably and the population of the city was only less than 800. In the late 19th century, then reached the open pit Virginia City and brought a new boom, which ended in 1937 again with the end of this degradation , even though mining continued with the mining of quartz in the following years . Today, Virginia City is a ghost town with partially restored houses, making it a tourist attraction .
