life and work

Virginia Henley is the daughter of Lillian and Thomas Syddall and grew up near Manchester . After studying history, she married Arthur Henley in 1956 and went with him to Ontario , where she initially raised their two sons as a housewife. Inspired by reading the works of Kathleen E. Woodiwiss , she wrote her first novel, The Irish Gypsy , which she was able to place at Avon Books in 1982 . The book was a Bodice Ripper , a trivial romance novel , the story of which was enriched with passionate sex and set Henley in Ireland during the Great Famine (1845-1852). Her second novel, Bold Conquest (1983), was set in the English Viking Age and the third, Wild Hearts (1985), was set in Renaissance Scotland . Henley is regarded by her readers as an author whose portraits of bygone times are more detailed and historically more precise than is the case in the average Bodice Ripper novels and historical romances .

In the mid-1980s, Henley left Avon and moved to Dell , where she continued to write romance novels that took place in the British Isles during the Plantagenet and Tudor kings. Exceptions are the novels The Pirate and the Pagan (1990; time of Charles II. ), Seduced (1994; British colonial time), Enslaved (1996; 18th century and Roman Empire ).

Henley stayed with Dell until 2001 when he signed with Penguin . There she published a number of romance novels in the late Middle Ages ( Infamous , 2006; Notorious , 2007), in the ages of Jacob I ( Insatiable , 2004) and Charles II ( Unmasked , 2005), in the Regency period ( Ravished , 2002; Undone , 2003; The Decadent Duke , 2008; The Irish Duke , 2010) and in the Victorian Age ( The Dark Earl , 2011).

The Dark Earl was the last novel that Henley published in book format. Her next novel, Master of Paradise (2011), was published as an e-book for Amazon Kindle , as were her subsequent works, which are no longer novels but stories.

Henley lives in Saint Petersburg , Florida , as a widow since 2013.
