Virginia Marie "Ginni" Rometty (born July 29, 1957 in Chicago , Illinois ) is an American computer scientist, electrical engineer and business manager. She was CEO and President of IBM from early 2012 to January 2020 . She then moved to the position of Executive Chairman .

Life

Rometty was born the oldest of four children and grew up in the Chicago suburbs . She received an award-winning bachelor's degree in computer science and electrical engineering from the Robert R. McCormick School of Engineering and Applied Science at Northwestern University in 1979 and then initially worked at the General Motors Institute . In 1981 she joined IBM as a systems engineer in Detroit . In 1991 she moved to the business consulting division of the group (IBM Consulting Group), in 2002, as general manager of the IBM Global Business Services division, she organized the integration of the PricewaterhouseCoopers consulting division, which was acquired from IBM at a price of around 3.9 billion dollars .

In 2009, Rometty became Deputy President and a member of the Executive Board, responsible for sales, marketing and strategy. In the fall of 2011, she was appointed the first female CEO and President of IBM with effect from January 1, 2012. In these positions she is the successor to Samuel J. Palmisano , whom she replaced as Chairman on October 1, 2012 .

In 2012 Forbes Magazine ranked Rometty 15th in its list of the most powerful women in the world , Fortune magazine listed her as one of the fifty most powerful women in the business world annually since 2004 (most recently ranked 7th in 2011), and Time magazine listed her in 2012 Time's annual list of 100 of the world's most influential people.

With total earnings of $ 97 million, she was ranked 6th on the Bloomberg Pay Index in 2016 and was the only woman in the top ten.
