Samuel J. Palmisano (born July 29, 1951 in Baltimore , Maryland ) is an American manager. From 2002 to 2011 he was CEO of the IT company IBM .

Life

Palmisano attended Calvert Hall High School in Baltimore. He received his bachelor's degree in history from Johns Hopkins University .

In 1973 Palmisano started working at IBM. He became President and COO there in 2000 . In March 2002 he was entrusted with the function of CEO and in October 2002 he was appointed Chairman of the Board of Management with effect from January 2003. Since January 2006, he sits in the Board of Directors of Exxon Mobil .

During his time as CEO of IBM, Palmisano converted the computer manufacturer into a service company. The business with PCs, printers and hard drives was sold and software companies were bought for them and the consulting and service business expanded. In October 2011, he resigned with effect from the end of the year and moved to the top of the Board of Directors. Virginia Rometty took over as CEO and President on January 1, 2012 .

In September 2005, Palmisano was awarded an honorary doctorate in the humanities from the Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute . He was made an honorary member of the London Business School in July 2006. In 2010 he was elected to the American Academy of Arts and Sciences .
