Vishnupant Govind Damle ( Marathi : विष्णुपंत गोविंद दामले Viṣṇupant Govind Dāmale ; born October 14, 1892 in Pen , Bombay , British India ; † July 5, 1945 in Pune ) was an Indian production designer , cameraman , film director and sound engineer for marathic films .

Life

Damle was born in the Raigad district in what is now the Indian state of Maharashtra . He learned the craft of stage painter from Anandrao Painter , a cousin of Baburao Painter , with whom he was one of the co-founders of the Maharashtra Film Company in 1918 . He worked there as a decorator, set designer, actor and cameraman and in film development. Sheikh Fattelal , with whom Damle worked closely until his death, was one of his colleagues . Together they made their directorial debut in 1928 with the silent film Maharathi Karna .

In 1929 Damle left the Maharashtra Film Company and founded the Prabhat Film Company with V. Shantaram , Fattelal, Keshavrao Dhaiber and Sitarampant Kulkarni . There he was the head of the sound department and introduced playback technology to Marathi-language films. Occasionally he also appeared as a producer, for example Shantarams Kunku (Marathi) / Duniya Na Mane (Hindi) (1937).

As a director at Prabhat, Damle made “holy” films with Fattelal, such as Sant Tukaram (1936), which was also shown at the 5th Venice Film Festival and received a special mention there. In his last film Sant Sakhu (1941), besides Fattelal, Raja Nene was also co-director. After Shantaram left Prabhat in 1942, Damle took over the management of the film company, but was unsuccessful.
