Life

Vitaly Portnykow was born in 1967 to a secular Jewish family in Kiev. After graduating from high school in Kiev, he studied from 1985 three years at the philological faculty of the University in Dnipropetrovsk and moved in 1988 to the Faculty of Journalism of Moscow State University , where he graduated 1990th Already during his studies he wrote for the newspaper Molod Ukrainy and from 1989 was a columnist for the Moscow newspaper Nezavisimaja Gazeta . After his studies, Portnykow worked as one of the first correspondents in the Parliament of the Soviet Union , which gave him direct access to the leading figures of the Soviet Union. After the collapse of the Soviet Union , he wrote for publications from Poland , Ukraine and the Baltic states, among others . After it became more difficult for journalists to work in the Russian Federation , he returned to Ukraine.

From 2006 he worked for the Ukrainian daily newspaper Газета 24 (German: Haseta 24 ), where he also took over the post of editor-in-chief in September 2007, but resigned from this in October 2007. From 2009 he worked for the Ukrainian TV channel TVi , where he directed the program The Truth of Vitaliy Portnykow and between 2010 and 2012 was the TV channel's editor-in-chief. From November 2013 Portnykow created programs at Espreso TV and actively participated in the Euromaidan . As a representative of the Popular Front political party , Portnykov became a member of the supervisory board of the Ukrainian National Council for Television and Radio in July 2015 .

Witalij Portnykow cooperates with Radio Free Europe / Radio Liberty and writes analytical articles as a freelance journalist for newspapers in Ukraine, Russia, Belarus , Poland and Israel .

Awards

Portnykow won the Zolotoe Pero 1989 award from the Ukrainian Union of Journalists and was nominated for the title of Journalist of the Year in Ukraine.
