Vitomil Zupan (born January 18, 1914 in Ljubljana , Austria-Hungary ; died May 14, 1987 in Ljubljana, Socialist Federal Republic of Yugoslavia ) was a Slovenian writer.

Life

Vitomil Zupan's father died as a soldier in the Austro-Hungarian Army in World War I, and his mother worked as a teacher. As a student, Zupan shot and killed a classmate of his high school in Ljubljana while playing Russian roulette and was expelled from school. He spent the next few years doing odd jobs abroad between Turkey and Portugal and then tried to get an engineering degree at the technical center in Ljubljana, which he did not succeed. In the late 1930s he wrote his first novel Potovanje na konec pomladi , the book with the title deliberately reminiscent of Celine's journey to the end of the night could only appear more than thirty years later. After the German conquest of Yugoslavia in 1941, Zupan belonged to the resistance against the Italian occupation organized by the Sokol , he was caught and imprisoned in 1942 in the Italian concentration camp Gonars . When Italy surrendered in 1943, he was released and joined the Slovenian partisans, where he was supposed to do cultural work.

After the end of the war, Zupan became cultural editor of the Slovenian radio in communist Yugoslavia in 1947 . He married Nikolaja Dolenc and they have two children. In 1947 he received the Prešeren Prize for his novel Rojstvo v nevihti . In 1948 he was charged with high treason and sentenced to 18 years in prison in a show trial . While in custody, he wrote 25 notebooks with almost 2,000 poems. He was pardoned in 1954. For the next few years until 1960 he wrote under a pseudonym .

Zupan wrote prose, poetry, essays, plays, and screenplays. In 1983 he received the Levstik Prize for Potovanje v tisočera mesta and in 1984 a second Prešeren Prize for his lifetime achievement.
