Vitorino Freire da Cunha Gusmão

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Vitorino Freire da Cunha Gusmão , in some sources: Vitorio Freire da Cunha Gusmão (* 1757 ; † after 1815) was a Portuguese captain in the navy and between March 7, 1812 and May 22, 1815 governor of Portuguese Timor and Solor and captain general .

His predecessor António Botelho Homem Bernardes Pessoa died in 1810 in the first year of his term in office. Until 1812, the post of governor was vacant and a Conselho Governativo led the fortunes of the colony. Power was in the hands of Dom Gregório Rodrigues Pereira , the Liurai of Motael , Lieutenant Colonel ( tenente-coronel ) Joaquim António Veloso, and José de Anunciação , the bishop who was residing in Manatuto at the time . Governor Gusmão first had to assert himself against these parties. He was supposed to be supported by written instructions, the Instrúções do Conde de Sarzedas (also Documento Sarzedas ), which the Viceroy in Goa and Count of Sarzedas Bernardo José Maria da Silveira e Lorena wrote for him on April 28, 1811. The document is considered to be one of the most important sources on the colonial history of Portuguese Timor.

Under Governor Vitorino Freire da Cunha Gusmão, Portuguese Timor was the first to try, albeit unsuccessfully, in 1815 to plant coffee in the coastal regions west of Dili and in Liquiçá . It had previously been introduced in Maubara , which was then still in the Netherlands . Gusmão also started growing sugar cane and producing rum .
