Career

The staccione, who came from a socialist household, was discovered by Heinrich Bachmann at the age of eleven and accepted into the youth team of the Foot Ball Club Torino . In February 1924 he made his debut in a game against Hellas Verona in the competition team. After a season with the Lombard competitor US Cremonese , he was active again for the Turin club from 1925. In the championship 1926/27 , his younger brother Eugenio made his debut at his side, but both were often not the first choice under coach Imre Schoffer . The championship title was subsequently withdrawn from the club after manipulation during the season.

Staccione moved to Fiorentina , where he became one of the main pillars in the club's early years. In the debut season of Serie B he placed fourth with the club, at the end of the 1930/31 season he was promoted to Serie A as a second division champion . After a stroke of fate, his wife died together with his daughter shortly after their birth, he switched to Cosenza Calcio within Serie B , where his former teammate Mihály Balacics later trained him.

After the end of his football career in 1934, Staccione returned to Turin and worked for FIAT . After organizing a strike in March 1944, he was arrested by the police and handed over to the SS . On March 16, he and his older brother Francesco, who was arrested with him, were deported to Mauthausen concentration camp , where he arrived on March 20. Together with Ferdinando Valletti , a former AC Milan midfielder , he was partially used in the camp's soccer team. After a year he was transferred to the Gusen concentration camp . There, an attack by a guard caused a deep leg injury. Without necessary medical treatment, he developed gangrene and died of sepsis in a concentration camp .

In January 2019 a stumbling stone was laid in honor of Staccione in Turin by Gunter Demnig in the presence of a representative of the city and of Turin FC. At the Stadio Giovanni Zini , a marble slab with a bronze work by the sculptor Mario Coppetti commemorates athletes from Cremona who were victims of the Italian fascist regime; among them is also called staccione.
