Vivek Chibber

Vivek Chibber (* 1965 ) is an American sociologist . He teaches as a professor at New York University and is the editor of the Marxist theory journal Catalyst. A Journal of Theory and Strategy , a sister project of Jacobin magazine , in which he also publishes.

Chibber received his bachelor's degree in political science from Northwestern University in 1987 and a Ph.D. in sociology from the University of Wisconsin in 1999. PhD . He then worked at New York University, from 1999 to 2005 as Assistant Professor, from 2005 to 2013 as Associate Professor and since 2013 as Professor.

In the postcolonial studies Chibber is very controversial. In his book Postcolonial Theory and the Specter of Capital , he criticized the leading representatives of the discipline who belong to the Subaltern Studies Group . The postcolonial theory is not only empirically flawed, it has also revived orientalism , which it supposedly wanted to criticize.

In collaboration with Jacobin magazine, Chibber presented “The ABC of Capitalism” in three small writings, which were also published in 2019 in German translation. In an interview with Neues Deutschland , Chibber explained what audience he hopes for the series: people who have never had anything to do with Marx and are actually not interested in it at all. He oriented himself to the publications of the 1930s, the best because the authors were still involved in parties and movements. "Then in the sixties they went to universities and built their careers around writing incomprehensible stuff."
