Vivian Pickles (born October 21, 1931 in London , England ) is a British actress .

life and career

Vivian Pickles made her film debut at the age of 15 in the now-forgotten film Jean's Plan (1946), where she took on the title role of Jean Fairfax. In the following years she played in several television films, including the title role in Alice in Wonderland and Catharine Linton in Sturmhöhe . At the same time, she gained her first experience as a stage actress in London's West End , alongside Roger Moore , Charles Hawtrey and Bill Travers , among others . After training to be an actor, Pickles made the leap into adulthood. In the 1950s and 1960s she took on numerous important roles in British theater. Also because of her dance training, she was able to play the ballet legend Isadora Duncan in a BBC film in 1966 , for which she received excellent reviews. In 1967 she also played the role of Mrs. Bennett in a television version of Pride and Prejudice .

Vivian Pickles became known to a wide audience through the classic film Harold and Maude (1971), in which she appeared as the control-addicted and self-centered mother of the main character Harold. It was her only American film. Otherwise, Pickles appeared in only a few films, including John Schlesinger's drama Sunday, Bloody Sunday (1971) and Lindsay Anderson's The Successful (1973), in the latter of which she embodied a benefactor for poor people. Her last appearance in front of the camera was in 1999 in an episode of Inspector Barnaby . To this day, the actress is repeatedly active as a stage actress.

From 1964 until his death, Vivian Pickles was married to the New Zealand actor Gordon Gostelow (1925-2007). Her son is the actor Harry Gostelow (* 1964).
