Vladek Sheybal

Vladek Sheybal (born March 12, 1923 in Zgierz as Władysław Sheybal, † October 16, 1992 in London ) was a Polish actor . He was best known for the role of Kronsteen in James Bond 007 - From Moscow with Love .

life and career

His father worked at a university. During the Second World War , Sheybal joined the resistance movement, but - like Desmond Llewelyn - was captured by Germany. He escaped and tried to pursue his dream job as an actor. Talent and zeal brought Sheybal the 1951 national prize as an actor. Back then, acting was not enough to make a living in Poland, so Sheybal emigrated to Great Britain to prove his skills there. The possibilities seemed limitless, and Sheybal decided on his future-proof training: He studied film production and enrolled at Merton College in Oxford . When his work permit as an actor was withdrawn, a world collapsed for the mime. Because of his excellent educational background, the Pole was later given the opportunity to work as a director for British television.

As an expert in the field of acting, he rose to become an acting teacher at the Royal Academy of Dramatic Art . He met Sean Connery even before the film collaboration. Connery's wife, Diane Cilento, knew both of them and it was through her that the men became good friends. When the character Kronsteen was to be cast in Greetings from Moscow , the 007 actor suggested Sheybal. Terence Young was so convinced of the actor's expressive facial expressions that he decided to cast him straight away. In the course of filming there were heated arguments between Sheybal and Harry Saltzman about how to play the villain role. Young, however, still stood by his "discovery," and so the scenes on which Saltzman had little influence compared to Young were quickly filmed. Saltzman vowed never to sign Sheybal again, but later moved away from it, and so the ex-Kronsteen starred in the spy film The Billion Dollar Brain , also produced by Saltzman. Sheybal also starred in the Bond parody Casino Royale . In 1975 Sheybal played Sean Connery's brother in The Wind and the Lion . Sheybal was always welcome at Bond events. Another expressive villain role was that of Captain Ferreira in the 1980 television series Shogun .

Vladek Sheybal went down in film history once again as a series actor: in the British science fiction series UFO in 1969 and 1970 he played the rather obscure but always loyal, cautious and excellent doctor in ten of 26 episodes as well as in a UFO feature film and psychiatrist Dr. Doug Jackson.

Vladek Sheybal died in 1992 at the age of 69 of internal bleeding from a gastric ulcer .
