Diane Cilento (born October 5, 1933 in Brisbane , Queensland , † October 6, 2011 in Cairns , Queensland) was an Australian actress .

life and career

Diane Cilento was born in Brisbane in 1933 as the daughter of the tropical medicine doctor Sir Raphael Cilento (1893–1985) and the gynecologist Lady Phyllis Cilento. She studied acting in London and New York City and made her debut in 1951 in The King's Admiral , an adventure film with Gregory Peck in the lead role. At the side of Michael Redgrave , Cilento made her debut on New York's Broadway in 1955 with the drama Tiger at the Gates . For the role of Helen, the 1.70 m tall actress received the Theater World Award and a nomination for the renowned Tony Theater Prize .

Other film roles followed, including Tom Jones - Between Bed and Galgen , for which Cilento was nominated for an Oscar in 1964 in the category Best Supporting Actress .

In the British television series The 2 (The Persuaders) , which was filmed in 1970 and 1971, Diane Cilento played Adel Destroyed in the 23rd episode , the writer Cate Sinclair, a cousin of Lord Brett Sinclair (played by Roger Moore).

In Michelangelo - Inferno and Ecstasy , Cilento played alongside Charlton Heston in 1965 . 1972 another important role in Hitler - The last ten days .

Cilento withdrew from acting in the 1990s, and has since written novels and directed an open-air theater called Karnak in Mossman, Queensland, Australia.

Diane Cilento was married three times. After a brief marriage with the Italian Andrea Volpe from 1956 to 1960, which resulted in a child, she married Sean Connery on December 6, 1962 , with whom she was married for eleven years until September 6, 1973. Their child is actor and filmmaker Jason Connery, born in 1963 . Most recently she was married from 1985 to the British screenwriter Anthony Shaffer , who died on November 6, 2001.

Diane Cilento died the day after her 78th birthday in Cairns, Australia .
