Uladzimir Uladsimirawitsch Parfjanowitsch ( Belarusian Уладзімір Уладзіміравіч Парфяновіч ; Russian Владимир Владимирович Парфенович ; * 2. December 1958 in Minsk ) is a former Soviet - Belarusian canoeist , three-time Olympic champion and politician.

Sports

At the 1980 Summer Olympics in Moscow , he was the only canoeist to date to win three gold medals at the same Olympic Games. He was victorious in a single kayak over 500 m and together with Sergei Tschuchrai he won the two-person kayak competitions over 500 m and 1000 m.

He was also world champion in 1979, 1981, 1982 and 1983.

politics

After he finished his sports career, he worked for the Ministry of Sports in Belarus, the KGB and for police units.

In 2000 he ran for parliamentary elections and was successful. He has since been a harsh critic of Aljaksandr Lukashenka , the current president of Belarus. On June 3, 2004, he and two other members of parliament went on a hunger strike to protest the parliamentary chairman's failure to put their proposals to amend the electoral law to the vote. They stopped their hunger strike after 18 days on June 21st when parliament voted against their proposals.
