Vladislav Ardzinba ( Abkhaz Владислав Григори-иҧа Арӡынба / Vladislav Grigori-ipa Ardsynba; Russian Владислав Григорьевич Ардзинба * 14. May 1945 in Eshera in Sukhumi , Abkhazian SSR , Georgian SSR , Soviet Union ; † 4. March 2010 in Moscow ) was an Abkhazian Politician. He was a historian and from November 1994 to February 12, 2005 President of the partially recognized Republic of Abkhazia .

Life

In 1966 he graduated from the Sukhumi State Pedagogical Institute (now the Abkhaz State University). He then studied at the Institute for Oriental Studies of the Soviet Academy of Sciences in Moscow and received a doctorate in history. 1969 to 1987 employee of the Institute for the History, Culture and Religions of the Ancient Peoples of the Near East . In 1987 Ardsinba returned to Sukhumi, where he became director of the Abkhazian Institute for Language, Literature and History .

In 1988 Ardsinba was elected a member of the Supreme Soviet of Abkhazia. In 1989 he became a member of the Supreme Soviet of the Soviet Union , where he was elected to the presidium and chairman of the subcommittee on the status of autonomous units. In 1990 he became chairman of the Supreme Soviet of Abkhazia, and in 1992 chairman of the Abkhaz parliament. In 1994 the Abkhaz parliament elected him as the first president of the republic. On October 3, 1999, he was confirmed in office with 99% of the votes, unopposed.

Ardsinba viewed Abkhazia as an independent nation independent of Georgia. Although he met the Georgian President Eduard Shevardnadze in Tbilisi in 1997 for cooperation talks, at the same time he has repeatedly made applications to Russia to accept Abkhazia as an associated member of the Russian Federation . In critical political situations, Ardsinba regularly flew to Russia to obtain support for his policies from the Russian president.

Ardsinba was married to Svetlana Dschergenia and had a daughter. His family is closely linked to the state-owned AbkhazLes wood factory. It is one of the largest in Abkhazia and trades with Turkey.

Ardsinba had not appeared in public since 2002. He suffered from a chronic illness and received regular treatment in Russia. The affairs of state were essentially taken over by the then Prime Minister Raul Hadschimba , who became his successor in 2004. On February 12, 2005 he was replaced by Sergei Bagapsch .

When Ardsinba's health deteriorated sharply in early March 2010, he was flown from Sukhumi to Moscow on a special plane, where he died on March 4, 2010 in the central hospital.
