Roch
The bird Roch , also Roc, Rokh, Ruch or Rock (from Arabic الرُخّ ar-Ruchch , DMG ar-ruḫḫ , from Persian ), is a mythical creature from the Arabic tales ofthe Arabian Nights . However, he is also mentioned in descriptions by Marco Polo and other travelers and traders in the Indian Ocean and, according to their statements, is taller than a person, because Sindbad from the Arabian Nights is said to have tied himself to one of Roch's legs to investigate his fate on a remote island to escape. According to the fairy tale, the roc fed on elephants.

- In the Arab fairy tales, the bird Roch is a bird of such marvelous size and strength that it can carry an elephant through the air. It is a common vehicle for air travel so common in Arab fairy tales, and also plays its role in Middle High German poetry.
Mainly the roch is mentioned in fairy tales, whereby it can be assumed that it was created through imaginative embellishments and exaggerations, as is the case in every fairy tale. But there are other attempts to explain the possible existence of the roch: According to the main cryptozoological theory , the legend of the roch bird is essentially based on the now extinct elephant bird (Aepyornis maximus) from Madagascar , which, like moas or ostriches, is one of the large ratites , but by no means reached the size of the legendary Roch. A historical reference to the equation of Roch and Aepyornis can be found in Hieronymus Megiser (1623). He quotes Marco Polo, who claims to have seen a very long feather of the bird, which should have come from Madagascar. Sometimes a relationship of roc with the same name is Rochelle as the current tower in medieval chess game was called associated. However, a direct derivation has not been proven.

The Vogel Rok roller coaster , which is thematically based on the Roch, is located in the Efteling theme park . The 1001 Nights gondola in Phantasialand , which was demolished in 2009, also included a scene with Roch.
The Swiss Fliegerstaffel 1 carried the Vogel Roch as a relay emblem.
Different species of birds of the genus Roc appear in the mythology of the fictional Warcraft universe.
The carrier aircraft Scaled Composites Stratolaunch with record wingspan and maiden flight in 2019 is nicknamed Roc .
