The bird park Heiligenkirchen in Detmold district Heiligenkirchen is a zoological institution specializing in exotic birds and small mammals. The focus is on direct contact with the animals. The bird park was opened by Kurt Eckstein in 1969 and has been family-owned since then.

history

In the 1960s Kurt Eckstein was looking for an area for the exotic and native birds he kept privately and found it in Heiligenkirchen. Due to the increasing interest of the surrounding population and the support of the local mayor, he finally opened the then bird and flower park Heiligenkirchen in 1969, making it accessible to the public.

In 1986 his son Friedrich-Wilhelm Eckstein took over the management. Through him the conception of the park was further developed in the following years. From a pure representation of the animals, the bird park changed to a modern zoological facility with the aim of addressing the visitors directly and enabling direct contact with the animals. In order to expand the offer for the whole family, a large adventure playground was built and a gastronomic offer was added.

For a future expansion of the park, a 1.4 hectare neighboring property was acquired in 2016.
